St Andrew’s Starbeck “building for the future” |
|
|
The foundation stone for our present building was
laid in 1909, and the building was completed in 1910. Today, in 2010 the
building limits our ability to serve the community of Starbeck well. We are
planning changes to make the building more hospitable and more accessible. St Andrew’s church has a vision to be a resource centre for the community of Starbeck through welcoming people with open arms leading them towards a Christian faith, while at the same time resourcing stronger Christians and affirming their faith. Our average congregation at the Sunday 9 am service is 70, and at the 10:45 family service is 130. On top of this we have a very active Sunday Club involving 80 or so children, two midweek youth groups, a thriving lunch club for the elderly, family spot for parents and toddlers, host many community activities and engage regularly in prayer and worship activities that require sacred space. In the summer months we run a week-long children’s holiday club and another week-long “holiday at home” for the elderly. The building is used for many community events
such as Starbeck in Bloom, the annual gala, local schools’ events; in
addition to the halls being rented by a number of local organisations. |

In 2006 the leadership of St Andrews
began looking at ways the building could be improved for the benefit of both
the regular worshipping community and the wider community in Starbeck. A
major consideration was for the building to be easily accessible to all
people regardless of their ability, to provide for the comfort and needs of
all visitors, and to create a warm, hospitable and welcoming meeting space,
including a large and flexible worship area. |
